I'm attempting to repair a round knockout hole in the side refractory. It is about 1.5" in diameter. I accidentally knocked it out with the fire poker. I don't use gas at all. Can this compound help? (No back to the hole). I realize your comment regarding expansion rates between the compound and refractory may differ, but I'm just wondering if this will buy me some time before spending 0+ On a new one. What do you think?

This product can indeed be used as a temporary fix to your situation. Per your comment about the previous question, the product will indeed likely separate over time, but it should last for awhile before falling out. You will need to carefully layer the patch material and build it up within the hole, since there is no backing to apply the material against.

Would this Rutland Masonry patch be the best product to repair a cracked and broken chimnea?
By eFireplaceStore on April 11, 2016

This will indeed be the best product to utilize, as it offers good adhesion to existing cast cement and masonry products and can be spread in various thicknesses without a problem.

I took the hearth off my fireplace and am planning to put stone tile over the whole fireplace. Where the hearth used to be, I had to break off the bricks so that it matched the rest of the fireplace - now it's jagged and uneven. I'm looking for something to fill this in and make it smooth like the rest of the fireplace before laying the stone tile. Could I use this to fill that area in or would you recommend something else?

Due to the amount of area that must be covered, I would recommend using the Rutland Castable Refractory Fireplace Cement - 12.5 Pound Tub. This product is designed to cure without heat and can be applied to large, irregular surfaces. The masonry patch works better for small (less than 2") gaps and can separate when applied to larger areas.

Can I use this to repair my vintage Imperial Kamado that is constructed in earthenware? What are the mixing ratio for a small batch?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on June 18, 2013

This would be an excellent product to patch your grill. Per the manufacturer, a total of 3 fluid ounces of clean water must be added to the 1.5 pound mix for the proper consistency to be achieved. This will allow for up to 15 cubic inches of coverage.

I have a pre fab fireplace in a mobile home. It has Ceramic Refractory panels that are 18" x 16", and 24" x 16". It has hairline cracks. Is this the best product to use to repair them?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on October 29, 2013

Unfortunately, we do not sell a product that can effectively be used to patch refractory panels. Because the panels expand and contract so much and at different rates of the patch material, the patch will invariably crack and separate. The panels themselves must be replaced.

I have a wood burning fireplace. On the back panel 22"x23" there's a hole about 1"x4". the hole doesn't completely go thru. what's the best cement to use for that?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on January 15, 2013

A fireplace patching compound, such as the item you are viewing, is the best product we offer for this purpose. I will say that patching refractory liners can have varied results. Depending on the consistency of the cement in the liner, the patching compound can expand at a different rate and will eventually start to separate from the liner. If this happens, the only solution is to replace the liner panel.

Will this work on a fire pit made of cast iron?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on January 31, 2012

This particular product is designed for use with masonry or cemented joints only. It does not have the ability to bond to cast iron. We do carry a product that can be used to seal small cracks in a casting:
Rutland Pre-Mixed Black Furnace Cement - 1 Quart Tub
This is only designed to seal a gap of 1/8" or less. If the damage is any larger, the casting will need to be repaired by a metal shop.
