- Now let's kick off our detail look at Capture One by exploring the interface and the layout so you'll know your way around when you come in to the program. Now when you first install a Capture One and open it for the first time, this is what you're going to see. This is the default layout. But keep in mind that everything in here is customizable. In other words, you can take these thumbnails and put them over here on the side or you can put them over here. You could take this entire area here and move it over to the right. All of these is customizable but this is the default layout. Let's take a look at the important area right up here where all these tools are located.

And if we take a look at the folder that looks like a folder, we'll click on, we notice that indeed this is where we organize our assets. This is where the catalog was first established where we can go from one to the next and so on. If we click on the icon that looks like a camera, this is where you administer your tethering operation. In other words, when you connect the camera directly from the camera to the computer and the software, the camera will send the image directly to Capture One enabling your art director and yourself to see the image and all its glory. If we go to the next icon which is the color administration, the three circles, we notice that we can adjust Histogram.

We have some very, very sophisticated color adjustment, capabilities here, so just by anything that has anything to do with color can be done in this section. If we look at the graph icon, that is the Exposure section, we can adjust Exposure, Contrast and Brightness. We can adjust the Dynamic Range. We have Curves dialog box which is ended up itself very, very powerful and so on. If we come up and click on the icon that looks like a camera lens, we'll notice that we have Lens Correction procedures for things like Chromatic Aberration, Pincushion Distortion, Barrel Distortion, and so on.

The next section is your cropping section and the icon looks exactly the same way in Photoshop and Lightroom so it won't be long before you'll immediately be able to identify that icon. But all of the very, very easy to understand processes for cropping are in this section. If you look at the magnifying glass, we see that we can do Sharpening, Noise Reduction. we can add Film Grain if we wanted to for a special effect. Take care of Moire Distortion and so on. And also there's a very powerful Spot Removal tool right here.

If we look at the icon that looks like a paint brush, then we can do localize adjustments. And say this little area right here or this little area right here on this image, this is where we would administer the localize adjustments. If we click on the icon that looks like a list, indeed, this is where the adjustment presets. In other words, if you've done a series of adjustments in these sections and you want to save those adjustments for future images, then this is where you do that in this section. If we look at the eye with a circle around it, this is information about the image.

All the camera information is here. But also the ability to add IPTC information is also located in this section. If we look at the cog, we'll see this is how you set up your export parameters such as choosing your output folders and again naming your image and so on. Now last but not least, we'll take a look at these machine wheels here. We click on this and this will really tell you how many images left we have in the batched process. And then, of course, this is your session history and this is your individual history.

In other words, if you have 10 images that you're trying to convert, then those will be reflected in the Queue tab. Now another very important area to look at is this area on the upper right hand corner where we change the view on the image on the workspace. If we click on the large icon, we go to 100% view. If we want a full view, we click on the small icon or we can scroll to different values between and you can also take those all the way up to the pixel level if you want to. So I'm going to go ahead and click on the full view mode and then I'm going to direct your attention down here at the bottom where we have our thumbnails.

And I'm going to enlarge the thumbnail area but left click, hold it down and then drag it straight up. And then I'm going to come over and click on this icon that looks like a flag and look at how the view changes and we have information that's organized here that makes it very easy to find specific images. In other words, if I want to find all images that have 3,200 ISO, I can do that. If I want to find all images that are shot in f/7.1, then I can do that and so on. Now if we click on the icon, the bar above and below the squares, then we have just the image.

This allows you just to see the image with the basic file information down below plus the ranking if you gave it any. That will be reflected here. Let's go ahead and click back on here and we'll bring this back down to its normal view. And so there you have it. A quick tour of the Capture One interface. Next, let's take a look at how to customize this layout.
