Users can be added to the BlackBerry Device Service in the same way as with the BES 5 and BES Express products. Log into the web administration interface and select Create User. You will then be able to select entries from the Global Address List.
If an email policy has been defined, when adding a user, you will be prompted to specify user details to complement the server settings already populated:
As with the BES product, you can optionally assign an activation password for the user that will be emailed to them automatically:
NOTE - in order to configure the SMTP server that the BDS should use to send activation email details to users, expand the Servers and Components section and select SMTP Configuration:
If all has been configured correctly, when adding the user you will receive confirmation that the email has been sent:
And the user will receive 2 emails, 1 containing activation instructions to complete on their BlackBerry 10 device, and 1 containing the activation password:
Once the user has been added, any of the defined configuration profiles can be assigned to users, or groups of users.
To activate the BlackBerry 10 device over the air, as the instructions in the email indicate, the user should add a new Exchange email account on the device by selecting Settings --> Accounts --> Add Account --> Email, Calendar and Contacts. They will be prompted to enter their email address:
And activation password as contained in the email:
The device will now be activated with the BES 10 server. To enable the BlackBerry Balance feature, a secure workspace will be created on the phone, which the user will be prompted to acknowledge:
And which the user will be prompted to enter a password for, which they will need to enter to access the Work area of the phone the next time the phone is powered off:
Finally they will be prompted to enter your password for the email account (their Windows password this time, not the activation password):
The device has now been activated, a message will be displayed indicating how to access the new BlackBerry Balance feature:
Which will now be available on the device:
Balance settings can be adjusted, if permitted by the administrator, within System Settings --> BlackBerry Balance:
If the activation fails for any reason, you can attempt an advanced activation. On the screen asking for the activation password, tap on the Advanced button:
Select the option to set up a Work Account:
You will need to enter the User ID of the account you are trying to activate, as well as the Server Address of the BES 10 server. These details can be provided by the BES administrator by viewing the properties of the user account within the BlackBerry Administration Service:
Users can optionally enrol themselves by connecting to the web desktop management interface. The Web Desktop for the BlackBerry Device Service (BDS), is a user facing, self-service interface enabling staff to activate and manage their BlackBerry 10 devices themselves without needing to contact the IT department.
The interface is normally located at https://[BDS_Server]/webdesktop/login and requires Internet Explorer 8 or later to function correctly.
Users can log in using their Active Directory credentials:
The site should be added to the Trusted Sites security group within your browser in order to be able to install the required Active X components, which you will be prompted to install immediately after logging in, these are required to enable device communications.
Once installed, the user will be prompted to connect their device via USB:
The device will be detected and the PIN number displayed:
Click on the entry for the device:
You will now have the option to Activate the device, click the link, the device will now be activated.
Alternatively, you can select the option to specify an activation password:
Once the password has been set, you can follow the above procedure to activate the device over the air.
The Web Desktop also allows you to wipe all data from your device should you wish to:
