Metalwork of this kind historically is associated with Germany or the Netherlands of the second half of the 17th century. This fine dagger may have possibly been made in the Spanish Netherlands or else made in Germany for export to Spain. Very well priced for such an exceptional dagger. They are designed so that 2 sharp iron/steel spikes are always pointing upward from a stable base (for example, a tetrahedron). Caltrops were part of defenses that served to slow the advance of horses, war elephants, and human troops. Iron caltrops were used as early as 331 BC by Darius III against Alexander the Great at the Battle of Gaugamela in Persia. On offer from a recent excavation are 10 Caltrops in very good condition. 253) Exceptional Broadsword (Tessak) Second Half of the 16th Century - North German or Scandinavian. This is a rather robust and exceptional example for a person of stature or a high ranking military officer and in very good condition. In 1604, Christian IV started buying military swords from armies throughout Europe to be sold to the farmers in his country who had been there since 1589 as an added support to his army. The Tessak sword most often had a curved blade with a shallow, wide fuller all the way down the blade. The Tessak arrived in Norway around the year 1600. Most swords were used and had age to them. Every year the farmer had to bring his weapons to the Våpenting (weapons meet) in order to prove that he still had his mandatory weapon. Priced to sell at,995! 81) The Exceptionally Elegant Etched Swords from the Ducal Guard are all numbered and may be divided into two series, one dated 1573 and the other 1574. The blades are generally inscribed with the date, an arsenal number and the crowned Ducal monogram IH. There are minor variations within each series and it would appear from the numbered swords extant that there were a total of around 600 swords in this group - with numbers in each series being recorded in the 290's. In 1573 a sword was delivered to Wolfenbüttel by the armourer Wolf Gabriel and it has been suggested that this sword on offer was a prototype for the group since it is not numbered, thus making it possibly the most valuable sword of its group. Given the large number of differing bladesmith's marks and the variation in minor details it is likely that the order for both the 1573 and 1574 swords was contracted to a number of swordsmith's. Length of blade 51 3/4 inches Length of sword 74 inches. Provenance: The Brunswick Ducal Zeughaus, Wolfenbüttel. A Museum Treasure That Is Very Well Priced For Most Collectors. 211) Exceptional Officers Grade German War Burgonet Circa 1580, directly from the Wurttemberg Armory in South Western Germany. It has the Wurttemberg City Armory mark on the visor which is only reserved for exceptional grade armor. This example was used quite a bit in its working/fighting life with slight personalized modifications. It's ear checks were replaced during its fighting life perhaps by a field armorer. They were probably changed very early in it's life. Contact Me To Get The Latest Lowest Price Possible From The Owner

212) Exceptionally Rare Italian Great Basinet Skull Circa 1350!!! There has not been a Great Basinet sold in the field of Arms and Armor in over a 100 years. There are only a hand full of museums world wide that have an intact example. To say a Great Basinet is the holy grail of Arms and Armor collecting would be an understatement. This exceptionally well preserved example was found in a river next to a castle in western Europe. The find location is available to the new owner. A near identical example can be found in the Royal Collection at the Tower Of London. See Vol 7 No. 1 2010. If you have ever dreamed of owning a Great Basinet this is the closest you will ever come. The form is certainly German with the accompanying evangelists on the four points of the cross, together with the text. The large size would indicate that this was hung on a wall of a house, institution or some such building. Height 53cm Depth 28cm Length 4cm. Priced To Sell Today at 5 206) Rare Italian Archers Sallet Circa 1450!! Has a few working life repairs which means it was used in battle. Its condition is similar to a large hoard of armor found in the Castle of Chalcis at Euboea (Negroponte) in 1840 during some remodeling to the military hospital. The armor seems to be mostly fourteenth century to mid-15th century Many of the pieces found are displayed in the Ethnological Museum at Athens and most of the "Chalcis Hoard" was eventually acquired by the New York Metropolitan Museum of art.

The Castle of Chalcis was captured by the Turks from the Venetians in 1470, and it is the period from the middle of the 14th century to this date which exactly covers the style of helmets and armor of which the collection is composed. The sole exception to this is a Morion, which is stated to have been part of the find. Contact Me To Get The Latest Lowest Price Possible From The Owner
