Crackle on Lossless Audio files

  • Quote
Hi, have recently purchased a DS2112J with 2 x 2TB WD hard drives to use primarily as music storage & server for my new high end Naim HiFi streamer.

Have installed DBpoweramp and started to rip my CDs to lossless FLAC. These tracks are perfect rips and play absolutely fine on the PC. However as soon as I move them to the Diskstation they develop a crackling noise on playback mainly as track starts & particularly at end on fade out. Occurrs on virtually all Albums / tracks ripped to FLAC, WAV or Apple Lossless and uploaded to music folder on diskstation, whether payed by DS Audio on the DS or via Media Player on PC or streamed to PS3.
Have tried moving files to diskstation via USB stick to eliminate possibility network is causing this. Problem remains. Doesn't seem to be a problem with low quality MP3s, just lossless files. Have tried ripping via iTunes, EAC as well as BD Poweramp & still same issue.

Have raised support ticket 5 days ago but other than requesting further info a solution is not forthcoming.

Has anyone experienced this before? Have scoured the forums and haven't found anything similar.

I have the same issue with my Synology 212+ in combination with my Denon 2312 AVR.
Also the lossless file types have issues. However if I use the iPad 2 to select the files and use it as player then connecting via airplay the sound is good. (if i set DSAudio directly to play, also via airplay, there is crackle)

Haven't tried airplay but put the DS audio app on my iphone and still get the crackling.

Have found that the bit rates for the files downloaded to the DS212J change. All my FLAC & WAV files are ripped at 1411kbps i.e. lossless. However when moved to NAS they seem to lose some of the bits e.g wav file showing as 1378kbps & FLAC has dropped to c600kbps.

Also found that if I copy wav files back to the PC and play the crackling is still present, although the FLAC & Apple Lossless files seem to play correctly again.

Opened the ticket with support a week ago. They are very slow to respond.

I've noticed this too; I'm glad it's not just me. I stream from a DS212j to my PS3 and it tends to crackle at the end of the track. They were all encoded using EAC and I'm fairly certain the crackle isn't there on the original file ( although I haven't investigated hugely). Hope Synology can shed some light on this.

Well, I'm happy to report that after some extensive correspondence with Synology support, they gave me a firmware patch and it all seems fixed! Woohoo!

Seems a long time ago I encountered this problem. I'll look through my email correspondence when I get the chance and see if I can dig out the solution.

Further to my last post I just looked at the email exchanges and found the address they gave for a new firmware. However, I think it only relates to the DS212j and so wouldn't be suitable for your machines. I would raise a support ticket if I were you. They may not get back to you straight away but they were very good when they got going.

Same issue with my DS212 and USB HRT Music streamer II. I've the latest HRT firmware REV2.2 and just upgraded to DSM4.1. No change, even with FLAC files, I've some crackles on MP3 (320K) and FLAC.

My HRT USB Audio is working perfect when I connect to PC, listening same FLAC files or MP3 files

Same problem with DS212+ and NAD C 390DD.
Crackle gets intolerable after switching to 24bit mode (ALSA mode).
After some investigation I found that crackle produced by "mplayer" (player used by AudioStation) itself, even without AudioStation.
By default "mplayer" uses device "plughw" device that causes multiply format/frequency conversion. For example, 192000Hz/2ch/s32le input FLAC file converted 4 or 5 times by ffmpeg engine:
[in] 192000Hz/2ch/s32le
[format] 192000Hz/2ch/s16le
[volume] 192000Hz/2ch/s16le
[lavcresample] 96000Hz/2ch/s16le
[dummy] 96000Hz/2ch/s16le
[format] 96000Hz/2ch/s32le
[out] 96000Hz/2ch/s32le
The worst thing is that the file downgraded from 32bit to 16bit and back!

The same file played by "mpd" player daemon with "hw" device sounds perfectly.

Don't know whether it's possible to change configuration of "mplayer" to avoid that multiply conversions.

I have the same issue with Crackle sound when playing music file in USB mode.

Ticket #(ID: #144727).

I use USB to connect DS212j to a DAC device.

Besides, can DS212j support up to 192kHz (24 bit) file playing in USB mode?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, thanks for the ticket#, all models running Audio Station 4.0 (or above) support 192/24 in USB mode once enabled in settings). That includes the DS212j.
