Up, Up And Away!

Hello, folks! This is my last Tumblr post for possibly the next month or two…? I’m going to be traveling in India until the 5th of November, so I’m not sure when I’ll next have the time to log into Tumblr or update my stories on AO3.

God willing–well, the god of fandom, anyway–I will still be able to occasionally appear on Tumblr and post on AO3, but I’m not sure how likely that is. Traveling with an eleven-month-old baby? Yeah. I’ll be amazed if I survive the experience.

If I do, I should be back in November! Have a fun Halloween and keep fandom lit for me! I’ll be back!

It’s Dark Matter, and it’s a science fiction series currently in the midst of its second season. There are multiple reasons you should be watching this show, ranging from badass women to badass women of color to, oh, BADASS WOMEN.

Here are some GIFs of said badass women, posted by sh00t, dark-matter-of-opinion and aleclightwqqd, respectively:

An interview with the show’s creator reveals the deliberateness of this approach:

“The women on this show are the ones who usually save the day,” Mallozzi shared with me in his office when I visited their Toronto-based set a few weeks ago. “And we’re thirteen for thirteen on episodes that pass the Bechdel Test.”

Hell, yeah. The entire show is best described by this single GIF:

I love it. The show not only has twisty storylines and fascinating world-building, but men who are clearly nowhere near as capable as the women, a point that is made repeatedly and with increasing frequency as the show continues. The men are almost foils for the women to show off how awesome they are. In fact, here is a neat little fanvid about that very phenomenon:

Dark Matter is that rarest of creatures: a television show that actually gets better instead of worse. The number of white guys actually decreases as the show progresses, and the number of women and characters of color actually increases. Unbelievable, huh? For a change, it’s not the female protagonists who get fridged, but the male ones. :) :) :)

Sure, for a short while there in season 1, you might think that the show is going to take the typical heteronormative route in which the BAMF woman is “disarmed” and “defanged” by the Nice Guy, but the show very deliberately turns that stereotype on its head.

The main female lead (Two) sleeps with whoever she wants, regardless of the Nice Guy’s whining, and is such a stone-cold utilitarian that nothing and nobody, let alone some immature man-boy with silly romantic notions, is going to put a crack in her self-possession. She starts off as the commander of the crew and retains that position, making the men submit to her will, rather than the other way around.

Sex is not portrayed as an act of submission for women, or as an act of domination for men. Two remains fully capable of making tough decisions, and it is her own rediscovery of her moral compass that changes her, not a man.

That stone-cold factor I mentioned is rarely allowed female characters. But in this show? The women are more often the ruthless ones–the powerful ones–the ones that can take control of a situation and kick its ass. Repeatedly, both minor and major female characters in the show–including the initially innocuous-seeming Five–are portrayed as nearly terrifying in their competence. I spent most of my time stuffing my fist in my mouth to stifle my orgasmic moaning.

This is the new female character added to the cast as of season 2, and I worship her already:

Also, did I mention Zoie Palmer? ZOIE PALMER. Zoie. Fucking. Palmer. If you’re her fan, this show is made for you. She plays my favorite character, Android, and manages to combine extreme cuteness with extreme ass-kicking. And the feels! Oh, the feels. I stay up nights crying into my pillow while stroking Android’s face on my iPhone screen.

clears throat

Anyway. Er. Dark Matter is basically about a bunch of people who wake up on a spaceship with no memories of who they are, and whose search for identity ends up changing the course of human history.

The characters take up names in accordance with the order in which they were awakened–One is the first to have woken up, for example, while Six is the last. (Well, technically, Android is the last, but she’s an android, so she doesn’t get a name. Which is kind of sad.)

I won’t give you more spoilers than that, other than to (briefly) mention that my OTP is Five/Android, which I call “Fivedroid” for the sake of convenience. Five is the youngest of the crew, a teenage girl and a technological genius. And guess what the most important technological device on the ship is? Yep. It’s the Android. Who literally slaughters a whole room full of people for Five, just because Five says, “Kill them all.”

I AM HAVING SO MANY DOM/SUB FEELS RIGHT NOW.

Just to show you Android’s heart-stopping badassery, here is a clip that I’ve watched way too often for it to be healthy:

Damn. Hot, ain’t it?

I mean, sure, there are hot guys on the ship, too. And you can (and should) totally ship them, One/Three being a prime example. But I shipped Five/Android from the get-go, and Two/Nyx from the moment they met in season 2. Just. The women. They are so perfect and they have so much chemistry. This show is femslash heaven.

What a nice change from shows where most of the main characters are men, and where most of the ships are therefore slash, huh?

Does anyone else find Commander Delaney Truffault painfully hot?

Like, with her sharp suits and sharper eyes and razor of a smile? With her perpetually upturned collar and sly, knowing smirk? With her smooth, ice-cold, whiskey-on-the-rocks voice and her undeniably commanding presence? With that beautifully monstrous brain, ticking along like an intricate watch, workings within workings and plots within plots?

I’d vote her for Head of Slytherin, anytime.

Also, head of whatever is in my pants. Step on me, goddess. Crush me beneath the boot-heal of your flawless logic and unflinching composure.

Not to mention the incredible chemistry Commander Truffault has with Two. I am personally calling their ship Twofault, because, WHY NOT???? Does anybody else ship them? Please tell me you do. I kind of ship Truffault with Five, too, especially after the season finale.

Imagine all the MILF-y goodness. Imagine all the mommy kink. Imagine all the Dom/sub interplay as Truffault tries to take control of Two, or as she tries to protect Five!

Imagine!

YOOOOOOO SO I FINALLY GOT TO WATCH THE DARK MATTER SEASON FINALE!!!!!11!!1

Seriously, this show just keeps getting better and better. I was in literal physical pain when the episode ended, because I was in such suspense that it actually hurt, and I knew I’d have to wait for the next season (thankfully green-lighted!) to resolve that suspense.

Key points I loved:

  • THE ANDROID SAYING SHE’S WORRIED ABOUT FIVE AND THAT SHE’S NEVER EXPERIENCED SUCH SCARY EMOTIONS BEFORE JUST KILL ME NOW NO SERIOUSLY JUST STAB ME IN THE CHEST WITH A HOT POKER
  • Ryo being Slytherin af
  • The entire team (except Nyx) dressed to the nines, including Five, who killed it as a sexy little corporate kitten
  • BABY BOY-BOT BEING UBER CUTE AND PROVING THAT FIVE IS SOMEHOW A MAGNET FOR CUTE ANDROIDS
  • Baby boy-bot kicking ass
  • Delaney Truffault, commander of the Mikkei Combine, having RIDICULOUS amounts of chemistry with Two (how can I not ship them?)
  • Truffault’s upturned collar making my gonads melt into some kind of indistinguishable lust-gloop
  • The hot Galactic Authority super-cop being super-coppy
  • Three ripping his fancy outfit off after complaining about it for approximately five million years
  • Six being such an EARNEST DAD lol that he somehow manages to convince the most paranoid bastard in the galaxy that he’s telling the truth about alternate realities
  • Everything
  • No, I mean it, I loved everything about this episode

I shall now wait in an agony of impatience for the next season to start airing! :)))))))))

Gursh darn it, it’s time to go offline again! I probably won’t be online again until, like, Monday or Tuesday, because the Watson and I have a shitload of shopping to do this weekend for our trip to India on the 24th. Most of that is actually shopping for baby stuff, like extra bibs, extra nappies, extra food containers, extra formula containers, extra wipes… Extra everything, basically. Except for an extra baby. Thank god.

No worries! And to answer your question, fully ethnic Ashkenazi cannot be black, though a black Jewish person could be raised w/ the Ashkenazi culture - but that would have been extremely rare in Germany/Eastern Europe during that time period. Of course, today there are many people who are biracial Ashkenzai Jews, like Drake, Lenny Kravitz, Kat Graham, etc. There are many ethnic sects of Judaism that do include black people and black Magneto could be from one of those easily.

YAAAASSSSS. high-fives See, this is what I love about Tumblr; I learn so much, about so many parts of the world and about so many cultures and histories. And that’s all because people like you are willing to share their experiences and knowledge. Thank you again, both for being my teacher in Jewish history and for better informing my desire for a black Jewish Magneto! Like, now I can actually imagine how that would come to pass, and how that depiction would have to differ from the current Magneto’s description, from a historical perspective.
